Tandem Coffee House

Recently Mr Tearoom and I popped into the Tandem Coffee House on Lower Hillgate in Stockport Old Town, after eye spying it in my copy of the Northern Independent Coffee Guide.  We were a little late for lunch on that rainy old day but who needs it when there is cake, some very nice coffee and Alison to welcome us in!

Tandem Coffee house is, as the name would suggest, a very cycle friendly cafe with cogs galore, cycling prints, posters, magazines and books to set the scene.  There are locks for your bikes to.  Mr Tearoom was in bicycle heaven.  There was great coffee supplied by Manchester based roasters, Heart & Graft (previously coffee circle).  From the cake selection (swoon) we tasted the super light and fluffy blueberry muffin cake and a piece of ginger crunch.  The cakes are supplied by locals Silver Apple Food Co. and are de-li-cious.  The artisan breads that make up the savouries on the menu come from Trove Bakery.  Another Manchester favourite.

This little gem certainly brightened up a miserable day as did the warm and friendly welcome from co-owner Alison who runs the coffee house with her husband Seb.  She is the connoisseur of the coffee and cake while Seb is the cycle enthusiast.  As well as running the Tandem by day they organise cycle quiz nights, with food and prizes, to get local cycle teams or just anyone with an interest in cycling riled up with competitive spirit!

The coffee house also sells speciality tea, their Heart & Graft coffee blend and some cute cycling themed cards and prints to.

The old town of Stockport where Tandem is located, is truly underrated.  Amongst the cobbles lies the Stockport Market Hall.  This grade II listed building dating back to 1861 still houses market stalls today along with the fabulous Vintage Village Fair held on the second Sunday of each month.  This is one of my favourite places to mooch and seek out some cheeky finds.

Surrounding the market hall are many other independent businesses selling furniture, clothing, vinyl, vintage treats and food and drink.  There are good pubs to.

I digress!  My point is that away from the high street and the mainstream retailers, Stockport Old Town has a lot to offer, including a rich history.  It is here that you find individuality, originality and community spirit.  Top of my list?  The Tandem Coffee House of course.

Ps. I’ll be back for lunch!
