Lemon & Rosemary Breakfast Loaf

Whilst honeymooning earlier this year, Mr Tea Room and I spent a couple of days in Lyme Regis on the beautiful Jurassic Coast.  We stayed in the lovely Dorset House, a luxury B&B housed in a Grade II listed Regency villa, overlooking the Dorset coast.  It was here, amongst the tasty wholesome breakfasts, that we sampled the owners lemon and rosemary breakfast cake.  It was so delicious I had to try it myself.

I didn’t get the owners recipe (school boy error) but I did find this recipe on the lovely blog ‘What Should I Eat For Breakfast Today?’ and it worked a treat.  Its so quick and easy, you must give it a whirl. Who says you can’t eat cake for breakfast!

You will need:

  • 170g butter at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • zest from 1 lemon
  • 1/2 cup of natural yoghurt
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 & 1/2 cups of plain flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp (be generous) fresh rosemary, finely chopped

Cake Week

It has been a rainy old week down south so there was nothing for it than to drink tea and eat cake!  I spent this drizzly past week in the homelands of Surrey while Mr Tea Room was cycling from our hometown in Cheshire, all the way to London. He was burning calories whilst I was eating them, thus I called this post ‘Cake Week’!

In between work and rain I ventured out for tea/coffee and cake to a couple of little tea rooms.  The first being The Little Barn Cafe in the picturesque village of Elstead where I grew up.  The Barn Cafe opened in January of this year and is based in one of the oldest buildings in Elstead.  It is a perfect addition to the village.  Here Ma, Pa and I were on a sugar high after sampling the pistachio, pomegranate and honey cake and the yummy coconut and chocolate ‘Bounty’ cake.  All washed down with a good strong brew!

Top Five Wedding Cakes

I love cake.  I love eating cake, making cake, eating it some more.  Having researched wedding cakes for our big day I thought I’d share some of my favourite ideas in this ‘Tea Room Top Five’ blog…

  1. THE NAKED CAKE

I am biased as this was my choice of Wedding cake.  Its homely, rustic, packed with buttercream, jam and lemon curd.  It’s Victoria Sponge so therefore it doesn’t get any better and you could (possibly) make it yourself so it would be a steal as far as wedding cake costs go.  No fancy decorating needed just some berries and flowers and some Mr and Mrs bunting and Voila!

Gotta Love The Bake Off

Grab a cup of tea, take the weight off and…relax.  The Great British Bake Off is back and all is well with the world again.  There’s something so calming and homely about the GBBO, like slipping on a pair of comfy slippers and watching your Nan whip up a sponge cake.  It’s so reassuring.  This year is no different and once again its a joy to watch the “golden berry” and old blue eyes giving it to them straight about how bland their biscuits are.
